That’s right, I am the *F* word.  Feminism is not the evil it is often made out to be.  Nor are most feminists the evil, man-hatting, tree-hugging, veggie-eating extremists that people sometimes think they are.

A wise woman once said…”Do you believe that all people should get equal pay for equal work?  Do you believe that all people have certain rights that should be protected?  Do you believe all people should be allowed to live without violence?  Then you are a feminist.”

Welcome to the dark side 🙂

“Do you believe that all people should get equal pay for equal work?”

The places I have worked for the last 30 years this has never been an issue. Based on my research, most of the differential comes from comparing apples and pears. Every year more and more women compete with men for the same jobs – sales, scientists, …. When you look at all women working and all men working, you still have more women in administrative positions that may not pay as well as some positions that men have. I am in a sales job and the women get the same base pay I do. Some are more successful than me and make more money than I do. Some make less.

“Do you believe that all people have certain rights that should be protected?”

Life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness. That’s about it.

“Do you believe all people should be allowed to live without violence?”

This would be nice but it isn’t real workable in the sense that we cannot expect our police to be a preventive deterrent. Hence, I am a big believer in the 2nd amendment. And you need to learn how to use ’em too.

    “Then you are a feminist.”

Are you sure about this one? 🙂

A wise woman once shared this with me and I tend to agree.

I’m really glad that your employer offers equal pay. Really, that isn’t sarcasm. The university where I work and study has a major wage gap that they are ‘attempting’ to close. Don’t really know how one attempts this and doesn’t manage, but there ya go. Also, it was only recently that the law was amended to prevent that wage gap past the first 6 months of employment. As it was, if you were payed differently based on sex (male or female), and you realized this more than 6 months after it started, then you could not claim the back wages you should have been paid. As most employers require an at will employment statement (which usually includes not discussing wages with coworkers), if people were doing what they were supposed to do, they would never know there was a discrepancy.

For more on protected rights, see all of my Fairness crap o here. It’s everywhere. Reader’s Digest condensed version is that people have protection based on a great many things, but (at least where I live), people can (and have) been fired, thrown out of their rental homes, and refused public services (museums and pools specifically in our area) based on sexual orientation. In my book, that just ain’t cool.

The violence refers to both domestic and acquaintance violence or rape. Also a touchy subject around here, as one of our state legislators was convicted of murdering his girlfriend.

Besides, the monkey must have something to dance to.

I guess we are just a little more enlightened down here in TX. haha. I have not in my lifetime as an “adult” never run into these types of discrimination. I have gay friends who pretty much live their life as everyone else does. I for one do not condone PDA’s by any group, other than normal stuff. Whatever your lifestyle, don’t rub yours in my face.

With respect to the last one, that is not real black and white with me. I’ve had family members accuse someone of “date-rape” and part of that was so they could get out of trouble for a little too much drinking. I do not know for sure what happened and don’t pick sides in this one. I was threatened with an accuasation of child abuse by an ex-spouse. Totally, totally untrue. What is black and white is when someone says NO. It does mean NO. I agree with that. There are just as many conniving women as men out there. (just my opinion). No one deserves to be assaulted, hit, beat or worse. Unfortunately, we as a people cannot be protected from that before it happens. Here in TX, there is an add-on to charges for assault of a family member regardless of who it is. It can be brother-brother, or any other combination. You must still be in the NE. I remember something about that incident. Horrific.

KY actually. Quite true what you say about women being convincing.

While I am indeed a feminist (and proudly, I might add), I don’t hate men 🙂 I subscribe to what is called Masculinity Theory. The idea that that sexism goes both ways, men can and are objectified as often as women, and men experience discrimination on an individual level with frequency (including but not limited to custody).
